WordPress Plugin: SeasonalCSS for WordPress

by Aaron Brazell on December 18, 2005 · 105 comments

Update: Please note that I will offer paid hands on service to make this plugin work on your blog. Please contact me for information.
Back by popular demand is SeasonalCSS. I figured I needed to update it to at least work with modern WordPress installs. It is completely rewritten! If you are using an old version, you need to upgrade!

As with the old version, this plugin allows you to designate holidays and “seasons” and assign them custom styles. You know, like Google customizes their logo on holidays, etc.

New Features

  • Admin Integration
  • No manual configuration (files and source code)
  • Features calendar “point and click” interface provided by the good folks at dynarch.com (released under GPL license and included)
  • Works under WordPress 2.0 RC1. I don’t believe there is any functionality incompatible with 1.5+, but I don’t know.
  • Included 17 preloaded holidays (no styles assigned)

To Do (Roadmanp)

  • Issue logic such as “third Monday in March” or “the Thursday before the Last Friday of November”
  • Recurring holidays or seasons (e.g. “every January 1st”)

Install

  • Download seasonalcss.zip (md5 hash: BA2DF2C22BD62FE12078CFEC19B80BFE)
  • Extract the entire seasonalcss directory to wp-content/plugins
  • Activate
  • Configure in Options > SeasonalCSS

Note that this is the only place I will take support requests for this plugin. Please do not email me or instant message me for assistance with this plugin unless 1) you have beer for me, 2) you’re my wife (in which case you have no need for support for this plugin) or 3) you are my wife and you have beer for me.

Besides it’s better to work things out in public so more people can benefit.

I installed it, so how exactly do you configure a css file to go with the holidays (using wp 1.5 currently)?

Standard CSS. Link to it by pasting the URL of the stylesheet into the blank in the edit page. It then “adds to” your existing stylesheet — overriding existing declarations if duplicates are found.

This is not really a WP issue… more a CSS issue with emphasis on “Cascading”. If you understand your CSS, then this plugin should be no problem.

Aaron,

I am looking at the seasonal css tag that is under options, when i click edit on any of the holiday fields the only values that I see are

Season/Holiday Name:
Description (optional):
Start Date:
End Date:

I have a pretty descent understanding of css, my question is where exactly does the css link go? From reading above it appears it should go somewhere in a field after I click the edit option. Am I missing something here? Thanks.

Aaron,

Well, I got the file uploaded and the place for my css is there, yet for some reason i get the following error when ever i try and update, see the linked picture for a exact error message.

WordPress database error: [Unknown column 'season_css' in 'field list']

So any ideas what I did wrong, or is this a something else entirely catagory of problem?
Thanks,
Will

This is likely because the version of SeasonalCSS that you were using has an outdated database schema. The easiest way to remedy this, since you have no real data, is to drop the wp_seasonalcss database table and let SeasonalCSS reinstall itself.

Note for future releases, I’ll have an upgrade method that will automatically run appropriate ALTER TABLE queries. But for now, that should fix it.

Thanks for giving this a workover, Will. I am not personally using SeasonalCSS so testing it is difficult in a non-real world environment. Your feedback helps things improve.

Hello,

After activating and editing a season, how would one go about calling this function? Awhile back I found a get_CSS() mention, but that didn’t work. Is there anything else one needs to do to install this plugin besides, installing, activating, editing a date to add the stylesheet URL? Thanks in advance.

Hey Satoshi…

It should happen automatically. Set your CSS linkage in the admin panel and when the time comes, it should roll over. I say “should” because I have yet to get good testing on it. If it doesn’t work, let me know and I’ll tweak things.

Hallo Aaron,

Is there a certain format one needs to use for the CSS URL? I modified my current CSS file to reflect changes in color and set the date to today. Does it matter if I’m using Minima Plus as my theme? Haha, one other thing, I can’t remember, but I’m pretty sure I read this somewhere, does the filename have to reflect the season name? Once again, thanks in advance for all the help. Great plugin! :)

Really confused,
Satoshi

Satoshi–

Hey sorry not get back to you a little quicker. The CSS URL does not have to be in any special format… just a valid URL to a working CSS file. The CSS in your custom format is parsed after the standard style.css in WordPress themes so it will override any elements currently defined in style.css.

Standard CSS cascade rules apply. Inline CSS overrides per-page CSS rules which override linked CSS stylesheets but for this plugin, your custom stylesheet will override the default stylesheet because it comes after.

The filename does not have to reflect the holiday, however you may want to do this as a matter of good practice so you know which stylesheet to look at in the future. But it’s completely up to your preference.

Did the stylesheet work when you set it for today? (Hint: you can look at the source to see if it was pulled in to determine if the plugin is broke or your stylesheet is broke).

Cheers.

Hallo Aaron,

I’ve checked the source and like the times before style.css is being called. Is there any specific way you’re calling the stylesheet?

For testing purposes I’ve named my stylesheet testing.css, however, it doesn’t seem to be wanting to actually use it.

By my stylesheet being broken, what do you mean? If you’d like to look at either the stylesheet or the necessary files, let me know. I love the idea of this plugin and really hope to get it implemented. :) Once again, thanks for all the help.

It will ALWAYS call style.css. Therefore, it is important that you understand that the rules of cascading stylesheets. SeasonalCSS will ADD another stylesheet call (or it should). Whatever is in the holiday style will have the net effect of

style.css + holiday.css - style.css duplicates

If you have style.css

#nav { color:#666; }
#entry { font-size:10px; }

and holiday.css

a:hover { text-decoration:underline; }
#entry { font-size:12px; }

The net effect will be:

#nav { color:#666; }
a:hover { text-decoration:underline; }
#entry { font-size:12px; }

You can certainly email me at aaron [at] technosailor [dot] com with the link to your stylesheet and time when it is set to go off…preferabbly when the style is in effect.

Also, is there any specific way to add more seasons? Save for editing one or adding one to the database directly? Thanks again.

Where are the dates stored? I’d like to copy my custom calendar into another WP installation without having to duplicate my work. Is that possible?

Thanks for a useful plugin.

It’s all in MySQL. You’d have to right some kind of importer to bring it all in. I can also do this if you want to have that kind of discussion with me. :)

It’s all in MySQL. You’d have to right some kind of importer to bring it all in. I can also do this if you want to have that kind of discussion with me. :)

Aaron - Great Plugin! Just a quick question. Will “holidays” nest within “seasons”? In other words, I may have four “seasonal” style sheets (Winter, Spring, Summer, Fall) spanning 3 months each and 12 one day “holidays” scattered throughout the year. Will my holiday sheets show up or will they conflict with the seasonal sheets? Thanks!

Hey Aaron,

really that was i was looking for such a long, long time now. I love this plugin =)

But i can’t make it work somehow after i installed it there are NO database tables in my DB =)

I uploaded the directory /seasonalcss/ and the seasonalcss.php both in the /wp-plugins/ folder then activated it trough the plugins panel and clicked in the seasonalcss menu install…

Now the only thing showing up there is
ID Season Name Description Start Date End Date

No buttons, no calendar, no fields and last but not least no database tables in the mysql

I’m on Wordpress 2.0.2 and used the plugin version from here.

Any ideas what went wrong are really appreciated ;o)

regards Marc

And i forgot…i can’t reinstall seasonallcss…

I checked the whole database the only field available is in wp_options the seasonalcss_version field.

If i now deactivate the plugin, delete it in the webspace and upload/activate it again there is no otion for me to reinstall it looks 100% the same as before.

The functionality of this plugin is great. I was wondering if you have any plans to make it even more specific, i.e. activated for certain timeframes, not just dates. I haven’t looked at the code, but it seems like that sort of ability wouldn’t be to hard to add. In particular, I’m looking for a plugin to change the stylesheet every day at a certain time, so that I can have and night and day look to my site. Any chance of that being added to the plugin?

Aaron, just started using this today and it’s fantastic, just what I was looking for. I like the way it can change images too, not just colours, so now I can change my entire site every season just like I wanted. Thanks for all the hard work!

I installed this on the newest WP (2.0.4) and for some reason - it’s not letting me delete any of the dates. Also, I can’t find anywhere that I would add a new one. Though, I suppose there are enough there that I can just edit them all to what I want them to be. I just thought I’d let you know of the problem :)

Thanks for a great plugin ^^ Absolutely brilliant idea. :)

Are you still working on this plug-in?
I have it installed right now, but I am also trying to modify it to do a little more. The biggest hurdle I am running into is reversing the String date. For example, turning Jan. 14, 2008 into 2nd Monday in January.

If you are still working on this and want me to send the changes I have made, let me know.
