Why do people have an aversion to elitism? Has socialism been that bred into people that everyone must be equal, or at least everyone must be percieved as percieving people to be equal?
It’s the controversy of the moment and I’ve stoked the fire at ProBlogger where I make the point that blogging is about being elite.
Using the word “elite” seems to send people into nervous convulsions, as I expected it would. See, people can’t handle the idea that they are elitist. But they are. I am. Anyone who owns a website, whether a blog or otherwise, plays the elitist game. To admit that is to be politically incorrect.
Tell me… Why should I pretend that I want everyone to be equal? Why should I pretend that I want other blogs to do better than mine? I mean, my actions say something completely different. I experiment and practice and try out new techniques to push my blog through the ceiling. I try to optimize my blog for Google to the point of even tweaking my page titles. I try out different ad positioning on a page to try to maximize my earnings. In other words, I do what I can to put my blog in the elite. If I can get front page results in Google for search terms of my choosing, then I have achieved elitism.
But people don’t want to admit that elitism is the goal when it is. Have we really been that brainwashed as a society that everyone must be treated as equals that we can’t even be honest with ourselves about what our motives are? Sure we can push to be ahead, knocking the competition out of the way and then paint a rosy self-portrait of being just and fair to all when that is obviously a farce.
Don’t get me wrong. I don’t have any problem with people trying to be elites. Just because folks try, doesn’t mean they are successful. It’s more than a decisions. It is a choice and a follow through with strategies and tactics that will put a person into the elite.
So folks, stop decieving yourself. Admit what is happening. There’s nothing wrong with it.

Yes Aaron, please continue to tell me what I’m thinking and what my motives are. Thanks.

But if I’m offended it’s only because I’m denying that I’m elitist… :)
(I’m more offended by this website being a real PITA on the Safari browser is OS X)
:)

It’s only been in the past couple of months - even on Firefox on a PC it’s slow to begin rendering. Not sure it might be a plugin of some sort? It really hangs Safari - takes nearly a minute after the page is displayed for Safari to allow user input again.
