Google News, the persistant beta product from Google that aggregates news from news sources all over, has made another enhancement to their product. Now you can customize the layout of the Google News page and reorder the locations of various “sections” on the page.
As Jeremy Zawodny observes though, the system has some serious issues. There’s no way to make changes persistant. No user account. Nothing to say that my preferences at work will be my same preferences at home or on another computer or browser.
Definitely an issue. It seems Google is trying to experiment with elements of portal sites like My Yahoo! but still trying to remain in the business of purely search and rejecting the elements of portalhood that it doesn’t like. I’m not so sure you can be on both sides of the fence.
Update: Just a nice hearty welcome to all of Jeremy’s readers. And Jeremy, Thanks for noticing. :-)

Don’t get me wrong here, I like some of Google’s resources. Namely email. But is Google News that big of a deal considering aggregators? I hardly EVER surf places like Fox News or CNN for information because I get so many feeds in my reader.
As for Google’s (cough)”praiseworthy”(cough) search tool, I have a difficult time liking it merely for the fact that marketers and advertisers tend to get atleast the top 5 results in anything I search for before I get to what it is I’m looking for.
But that has been an ongoing problem since Search Engines showed up on the internet scene.
Then there is blogger.com, Hello, and picasa2, 3 tools I have nothing but good things to say. So, I suppose 2 out of 6 isn’t so bad?
