It’s really pretty disappointing to set foot back on Maryland soil. On a low humidity day like today, it still pales in comparison to the weather in San Francisco. Mark Twain once said that the coldest winter he ever experienced was the summer in San Francisco and he’s right. It’s chilly. But beautiful.
I have so much I want to write about that I will in the next few days. I want to continue the discussion of Blog Architecture that began in earnest in the session I hosted at WordCamp and draw in, ideally, other bloggers who attended that session.
I also want to extend on my remarks to Om Malik in the Blogging and Journalism session. I’m quite amazed how celebrityhood causes people to allow windbags like him a pass on obviously contradictory and pompous remarks that were quite demeaning to the blogging community.
But for now, I’m jet lagged having red-eyed it back from the Bay and getting back into Baltimore a few hours ago. While I recuperate, feel free to take in the collective photos tagged wordcamp at Flickr. The photos are from the pre-party Friday night, the event itself and the after-party at Pier 38 Saturday night and include some of yours truly. Also, you can track the talk about the event via Technorati by either browsing or subscribing to (recommended so you can see new posts to the topic later as they become available) the Technorati wordcamp tag search. Lots of good and varying perspectives from across the blog world.

I hosted the session immediately after yours and I stayed in that room during the 3:00 session. It’s a shame I missed “contradictory and pompous remarks that were quite demeaning to the blogging community.” There are only a few things I like more than calling a spade a spade and I would have loved to call him on that. Hurry up and write something about it so the rest of us can get incensed, too.
Celebrities tend to get a pass on a lot of things, particularly in places like conventions, where that celebrity is often a big draw for a large percentage of attendees. That makes a celebrity a sacred cow far too often. And that just enforces the celebrity’s idea that s/he’s right. It does matter who said it, if the idea is crap, it’s crap.
P.S. I’m still trying to get the “recent comments” plugin to generate a view like your “The Conversation,” but it’s not looking promising. I can’t get it to only call the most recent comment for an entry with no repeat entries. Gotta go bang my head against the screen a little more. Maybe that’ll do it.

Strange. Chartreuse, myself and to a lesser extent Loren Feldman were the only ones calling him on anything.

By the way, Chartreuse just added his 2 cents. ;)
The fun begins. And whats this crap about Om not letting Chartreuse quote him? Is he some kind of “leaker” of classified information or something? What’s up with that?

I wish I had been there. Sounds like it could have been a blast with more people to point out inconsistencies.
There are journalists who do lots of research before writing anything down. But those are not the majority of journalists writing or being read. And they are not journalists who are necessarily taken more seriously than any other. Most journalists who do that kind of research are unknown to and unread by the mass public.
I think it’s going to flip soon and someone will say “if journalists are going to be taken seriously, they have to follow the same rules that Bloggers follow,” namely to have strong opinions and firm knowledge about what you’re writing (hmmm, are those blogger rules? dunno…).
Circulation of papers is on the decline, if I remember correctly. It would be nice to have a link to a statistic on that, but I’m a blogger and clearly don’t do any research or legwork.
